Cyndi Lauper & Lady Gaga for MAC's VIVA GLAM Campaign

By Cate Sevilla

Women coming together and collaborating for a good cause could never be a bad thing, and Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper teaming up as the faces of MAC cosmetic’s VIVA GLAM campaign is 100% amazing.

VIVA GLAM mainly focuses on raising the awareness of AIDS amongst women, as the number of women infected with HIV has steadily risen.

In fact, in the US, despite there being more resources for HIV prevention, the number of women living with HIV has tripled since 1985. Even more worrying, the MAC AIDS Fund website tells us that more black women between the ages of 18 – 35 die from AIDS more than any other illness.

Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper are brilliant choices for spokespeople for this campaign, as not only do they have “deep roots” in the gay community, which the AIDS crisis is most commonly associated with, but they’re both influential women who represent the two generations of women who are most affected by the AIDS virus.

Cyndi and Gaga are also known for being incredibly sex positive, independent, and strong, and both artists agree that if more women had a stronger sense of self respect, love, and confidence, that they would more often insist upon their partners using a condom.

Yesterday morning, the two blonde bombsells sat down to talk to Good Morning America, and the passion with which they spoke about how important campaigns like VIVA GLAM and safe sex was really moving.

In particular, hearing Gaga talk about how she used to be so insecure, and how she is always encouraging her “little monsters” to “free themselves” from insecrutiy and to just accept and love who they are was really inspiring.

It’s not everyday you get to listen to two very eccentric, sex-proud, intelligent, self-assured women standing up for a woman’s right to demand safe sex, for their partner to just put on a damn condom, as well as a woman's right to have female condoms.

Hats off to Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper, I hope that their music and their work for the VIVA GLAM campaign really make a difference.

VIVA GLAM lipsticks cost $14, every penny of which goes to the MAC AIDS Fund. You can find out more information on VIVA GLAM on both the MAC and MAC AIDS Fund websites.
